Playing in the studio
“Playing” in the studio often leads to wonderful results. So far, I really love the addition of saturated COLOR to my handmade paper, as well as incorporating text. The results are below. All images are watercolor and sumi ink on stretched handmade flax paper, 12″ x 10 1/2″, except “Ornamented” which is 7″ x 7 1/2″.

Re-painted
It always surprises me how much a painting can change, even when you think you are simply repainting ‘exactly’ the same image on the same surface. How much could it change, really? But each time I do it, I come back to Vija Celmins writing about her experience of repainting the same image on the same surface over and over again, how the surface changes subtly each time, and with each layer of paint, the depth of light becomes more pronounced.
Well this “Seed Pod” has only been painted twice, but I feel pretty pleased with its change in depth and clarity.
Unfortunately, I don’t have a ‘before’ pic at the moment…
